2020 election was so peaceful that BBC described it as ‘boring’ – Jean Mensah

Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensah has boasted about her pedigree relative to the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.

While speaking at the opening of the High-Level Meeting of the Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) in Winneba, Central Region, Madam Jean said the election was so peaceful that the BBC even described it as boring.

She asserted; “I humbly refer to Ghana’s 2020 elections as historic for the transparency, the credibility, the cost-effectiveness, the high turn-out and the peaceful conduct that characterized it.

“So orderly, so methodical, so calm were the polls on the 7th of December, 2020 that BBC could find no other way to describe our elections than boring.”

Her posture will definitely anger the biggest opposition party the National Democratic Congress (NDC) especially after they accused her of manipulating the result in favour of the ruling government.

Recall that Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Peter Boamah Otokunor has asked the government to dismiss the Electoral Commission chair, Jean Mensah.

Speaking to Citi FM at that time, Otukunor said the conduct of Jean during the 2020 polls is enough testament that she is not fit for the job.

“There is a need for major reforms of our electoral processes, including the replacement of the Chairperson for the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensah has lost credibility. She has lost that moral right and the realm of impartiality that is supposed to engulf the EC [is no more],” Mr. Otokunor said.

He further indicated that the NDC boycotted the EC’s IPAC meeting because they still believe the EC was biased in the 2020 elections.

“We felt it would be ruthless to sit in such a meeting and endorse the odious bias by Jean Mensah during the conduct of the election. We felt that would have been very problematic.”
