Williams, the daughter of former NBC Nightly News anchor and managing editor Brian Williams and TV producer Jane Gillan Stoddard, was born and reared in New Canaan, Connecticut. Doug, her brother, is three years younger than she is. Williams went to Greenwich Academy and New Canaan Country School.

She eventually enrolled at Yale University, specializing in English, and was a part of the St. Elmo secret society and Morse College. Williams worked at a Ralph Lauren outlet while he was in New Canaan.

Williams has appeared in several roles including playing Marnie Michaels in the HBO comedy-drama series Girls (2012–2017), which earned her a Critics’ Choice Award nomination, and the title role in Peter Pan Live!
