Amanda Blake was an American actress best remembered for portraying “Miss Kitty Russell,” a red-haired saloon proprietress on the western television series Gunsmoke.

Amanda Blake was born to Jesse Neill and Louise Neill on February 20, 1929, in Buffalo, New York, United States of America. Her siblings have not been identified as there is no information about whether or not she had any.

In the late 1940s, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer signed Amanda because the studio saw her as the next Greer Garson.

She appeared in a few Hollywood films, including Cattle Town, a 1952 western, and Miss Robin Crusoe, a 1954 adaptation of the Robinson Crusoe adventure. She made her acting debut in the 1954 film A Star Is Born.

Blake was most known for her 19-year role as Miss Kitty, the saloonkeeper on the television series Gunsmoke, which she played from 1955 until 1974.

In the 1957 episode “Coate of Many Colors,” Blake played Betty Lavon-Coate in Rod Cameron’s crime thriller State Trooper.

Following a Gunsmoke reunion film, she starred in two feature films, The Boost, a drug-addiction thriller starring James Woods and Sean Young, and B.O.R.N, both in 1988.

In 1968, Blake was inducted into the Hall of Great Western Performers at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.

She was the third performer to be inducted, following Tom Mix and Gary Cooper in 1958 and 1966, respectively.

They separated in 1982 and went their own ways.

She married Mark Edward Spaeth in 1984. In 1985, Spaeth passed away.
