MacDowell was born on April 21, 1958, in Gaffney, South Carolina, to timber executive Marion St. Pierre MacDowell and music instructor Pauline “Paula” Johnston (née Oswald).
She has English, French, Scottish, Irish, and Welsh ancestry.
Her mother was an alcoholic, and when she was six years old, her parents got divorced.
After a year of sobriety, MacDowell’s mother passed away at the age of 53 from a heart attack.
When MacDowell was eight years old, her father remarried, this time to Mary Frances Stone, who had already been married. This partnership lasted until his passing.
