“Apologize and withdraw textbooks or face our wrath” – Volta chiefs to publishers of controversial History textbook

The Volta Regional House of Chiefs is demanding the publishers of the controversial book that had content deemed as inappropriate against Ewes to apologize and withdraw these textbooks or face their warth.

According to the statement issued by the house, the described the content of the book as disgraceful and distasteful since it stereotypes Ewes.

The Chiefs also demand the immediate destruction of the book after an unqualified apology has been rendered to the Ewes.

An excerpt of the statement reads:

“We therefore unreservedly condemn this singular demonstration of tribal bigotry and prejudice and call on those responsible for the offensive publication, to withdraw the same from circulation and to destroy every part of the offending material.”

“We further demand an unqualified apology from the authors and publishers of this base material to be rendered to all Ewe speaking citizens of Ghana. In addition, we urge other ethnic groups in this country, to condemn such divisive publications which only serve as a recipe for chaos and disunity.”

Ghanaians reacted with outrage to the content of a History textbook published by Badu Nkansah which had contents deemed inappropriate against Ewes.

On the back of that, the National Council for Curriculum Assessment (NaCCA) issued a statement announcing that the said book was not approved and must not be used in schools.
