Barcelona's Luis Suarez accused of cheating to pass his Italian exam

Barcelona will reportedly cancel the Uruguayan’s contract, as the Blaugrana are eager to get the 33-year-old’s enormous salary off their wage bill.

Suarez was previously informed by new manager Ronald Koeman that he would not be a key part of his plans for the 2020/21 season. When news first broke of Koeman’s decision, the all-action striker was heavily linked with a switch to Italian giants Juventus.

However, to sign for the Serie A champions Suarez had to complete an ‘Italian test’ in order to obtain an Italian passport, one which he took – and passed – at the University of Perugia.

But now that his move to Juventus appears to be off, Italian outlets Repubblica and Ansa report that the striker has been accused of cheating, following claims that there were ‘irregularities’ and he was, in fact, sent the questions in advance.

A statement from the Perugia public prosecutor’s office reads, per Sky Sports: “Some irregularities have emerged in the exam of certification of Italian, sat on September 17 by Uruguayan football player Luis Alberto Suarez Diaz, needed to obtain the Italian citizenship.

“From the investigation, it emerged that the topics in the exam had been agreed in advance with the applicant and that the relative mark had been attributed even before carrying out the exam, regardless of the fact that an elementary proficiency of the Italian language had been verified during remote classes carried out by lecturers of the University for Foreigners.

“Today, the Italian financial police are moving forward to capture the documents at the university offices, to verify the actions described beforehand and notify the information assurances for the crimes of the revelation of professional secrecy, false representation committed by public officials in official documents and other.”

There’s surely no chance of a move to Italy now and Suarez will likely find himself in serious trouble if the accusations are indeed correct.

The Uruguayan’s only option now appears to be Atletico, but it remains to be seen whether Barcelona will sanction a move to a direct rival.
