Boat accident on Lake Volta taking 7 lives

A boat capsized on the Late Volta in the Kwahu North District of the Eastern Region, killing seven.

The incident occurred at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 14, 2022, according to DSP Ebenezer Tetteh.

A 20-person passenger boat caught in a heavy storm on the Volta Lake between Dzemeni and Havorkope on Dwarf Island capsized mid-way.

Seven people drowned, five females and two males aged 31-60. The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at a private morgue on the island.

Karrah Joseph Eric, District NADMO Operations Officer, said 13 other passengers were rescued after the boat owners conducted a search and rescue operation.

“The search efforts began last night and continue today. As a result of the river’s nature, other passengers may have drifted away,” he said.

The boat operators and passengers do not wear life jackets on the Volta Lake. Several drownings have been reported by NADMO and the police.
