Brandon Kyle Belt is an American professional baseball first baseman who is a free agent. He has played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the San Francisco Giants.
Belt was an outfielder and pitcher at Hudson High School in Hudson, Texas. In the 11th round (343rd overall) of the 2006 Major League Baseball draft, the Boston Red Sox selected pitcher Belt, although they did not give him the signing money that would have forced him to forsake his college plans.
Belt enrolled at San Jacinto College to maintain his negotiating position with Boston, but ultimately made the decision not to sign. In 2007, he pitched and played designated hitter for the San Jacinto baseball team. The Atlanta Braves selected him in the 11th round (348th overall) of the 2007 Major League Baseball draft, but he once more declined to sign.
Belt signed for a $200,000 signing bonus after being selected by the San Francisco Giants in the fifth round (147th overall) of the 2009 Major League Baseball draft.
He began his professional career with the San Jose Giants’ High-A club, where he was named an All Star at the halfway point of the season.
He improved his swing mechanics while working with the Giants coaching staff, which allowed him to advance through the Giants farm system more swiftly.
He performed admirably at all three levels in 2010, batting.352/.455/.620 with 23 home runs and 112 RBIs to complete the year and earn recognition as one of the Giants’ best prospects.
