The fire is said to have started at a part of the hotel that also serves as offices for Ghana National (GN) bank, a bank owned by the management of the hotel. The fire started on Saturday evening. Thick smoke was seen billowing from the hotel.

The cause of the fire is yet to be known. Both GN bank and Coconut Groove Regency hotel are owned by the former presidential candidate of the Progressive People’s Party, Dr. Papa Kwasi Nduom. Coconut Groove Regency Hotel is located behind the Ghana Immigration Service Headquarters in Accra.
