Brock Purdy is an American football quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL).
Brock Purdy bio
Brock Purdy, born on December 27, 1999, in Queen Creek, Arizona, played high school football at Perry High School in Gilbert, Arizona. He is the middle child of Shawn and Carrie Purdy, with Shawn being a former Minor League Baseball player for eight seasons.
Brock’s older sister, Whittney Purdy, played softball at Southeastern University and was able to out throw him, which reportedly frustrated him during their childhood. His younger brother, Chubba Purdy, also played football at Perry and later became a dual-threat quarterback at Florida State.
After playing college football at Iowa State, Purdy was selected by the 49ers with the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, earning him the title of “Mr. Irrelevant.”
Despite starting the season as the third-string quarterback, injuries to other quarterbacks propelled Purdy into the starting role, where he won all five regular season games he started and contributed to the team’s ten-game winning streak. This impressive performance led to the 49ers dubbing him “Mr. Relevant” and making him one of just five rookie quarterbacks to start in a conference championship game.
Brock Purdy professional career in perspective
Purdy was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers as the last pick (262nd overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft, earning him the title of Mr. Irrelevant for that year.
In the Wild Card game on January 14, 2023, against the Seattle Seahawks, Purdy made history as the first rookie quarterback for the 49ers to start and win a playoff game, maintaining a perfect 6-0 record in career starts. Demonstrating his exceptional skills, he completed 18-of-30 passes for an impressive 332 yards and scored four total touchdowns, setting a new record for the most touchdowns by a rookie quarterback in a playoff game.
Not only did this victory solidify his place in NFL history, but it also marked him as the lowest-drafted quarterback to start and win a playoff game, a remarkable achievement. Furthermore, Purdy became the first rookie quarterback since Sammy Baugh in 1937 to achieve over 200 pass yards and two pass scores in a playoff win, a feat that had not been accomplished since the AFL-NFL merger. Continuing his remarkable rookie season, Purdy led the 49ers to another victory in the divisional round against the Dallas Cowboys.
This made him only the third quarterback since 1970 to win two playoff games in his rookie season, further cementing his status as a rising star in the league.
Although he did not throw any touchdowns in this particular game, Purdy showcased his skills once again by completing 19-of-29 passes for 214 yards, making him the first rookie quarterback since 1970 to achieve over 200 passing yards in consecutive NFL postseason games. However, during the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles on January 29, Purdy unfortunately suffered a significant injury to his right elbow.
As a result, he was forced to temporarily leave the game and was replaced by Josh Johnson. Despite Johnson’s subsequent concussion in the third quarter, Purdy bravely returned to the field, albeit with limited capabilities. His main role at that point was to hand off the ball to his teammates, as his injury prevented him from throwing the ball more than 10 yards.
Unfortunately, the 49ers ultimately lost the game with a score of 31-7. Following a medical evaluation, Purdy was diagnosed with a complete tear of his ulnar collateral ligament, which severely restricted his throwing ability.
