Harris, who was raised in Jasper, Alabama, worked for his grandfather during the summers and considered him a mentor. He began studying the guitar on a broken, three-stringed instrument that his grandfather had given him when he was eight years old. Harris is a pianist as well.

Harris was employed by a barbecue joint and had already released an independent music project called Small Town Boy at the time of the audition.
