Wilson was born in New Zealand on October 5, 1970. Following her education at Christchurch High School, she went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Canterbury. In 1990, Wilson co-founded the Court Jesters improv group and was a member of the New Zealand team that won the World Theatresports title in Los Angeles in 1994. Afterwards, Wilson transitioned to full-time stand-up comedy and in 1997, she became the inaugural winner (alongside Ewen Gilmour) of New Zealand’s esteemed comedy award, the Billy T.
She also made regular appearances on TV3’s Pulp Comedy. In 2003, she relocated to Melbourne. In 2001, Wilson received the “Best Newcomer” award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and garnered critical acclaim for her performances at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2004. Her 2006 show, Up There, Cal Wilson, achieved sold-out status at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
