Chaim Topol was born in Tel Aviv, then-Mandate Palestine. Jacob Topol, his father, was born in Russia and moved to Mandatory Palestine in the early 1930s to work as a plasterer. He also participated in the Haganah armed group. Imrela “Rel” Topol, formerly Goldman, was his mother.

Before emigrating, Topol’s parents were active in Warsaw’s Betar Zionist youth organization. His father had origins in the Hasidic community; his father was an Aleksander Hasid and his mother was from a Gerrer Hasidic family. Growing up, Chaim and his two younger sisters lived in the Florentin working-class district of South Tel Aviv.

His primary school teacher, the writer Yemima Avidar-Tchernovitz, saw a theatrical side in him when he was young despite the fact that he wanted to be a commercial artist and encouraged him to perform in school plays and read tales to the class. At age 14 he started working as a printer at the Davar newspaper while continuing his high school studies at night.
