The oldest of eight children, Clarence Alexander Avant, was born in Climax, North Carolina, on February 25, 1931.
Up until the eighth grade, he was a student at a Greensboro, North Carolina, one-room school.
He attended Dudley High School in Greensboro for his first and second years of high school before relocating to New Jersey as a teenager in 1947.
Avant held jobs for a law directory and as a stock clerk at Macy’s in New Jersey.
In the 1950s, he got his start in the music industry by managing Teddy Powell’s promoter-owned Teddy P’s Lounge in Newark, New Jersey.
