Cristiano Ronaldo is officially the greatest player of all time, and it’s an undeniable fact, according to an algorithm developed by a leading maths professor at Oxford University.

Ronaldo is regarded as the G.O.A.T. in football, alongside Lionel Messi, Diego Maradona, Pele, and a few others.

The newly signed Manchester United forward is the number one in many people’s hearts and minds because he’s proven his brilliance in multiple leagues, and it’s one of the ways he’s topped a new list.

Dr Tom Crawford, an Oxford maths professor, developed the G.O.A.T index in collaboration with LiveScore to determine who truly is the G.O.A.T.

Ronaldo received a perfect score, with Messi, Pele, Ferenc Puskas, and Ronaldo Nazario rounding out the top five among players who have won two or more Ballon d’Ors.

Seven criteria have propelled Ronaldo to the top of the list, and you must decide for yourself whether they are sufficient to place the 36-year-old at the top.

The first two are club goals and titles, followed by international goals and titles, Ballon d’Or titles, individual honours and milestones, and finally ‘Z-factor’ seasons.

The final one is for seasons on the field where the impact of the plays significantly outperformed others from the previous five seasons.’

The former Real Madrid player has 674 club goals in 897 games in all competitions, but Messi has more games, having scored 683 times in 811 games.

When it comes to club trophies, it’s once again the PSG player who leads the way, with 35-30, even though Ronaldo has an extra Champions League win and league trophies in three countries.

Internationally, Portugal forward is head and shoulders above his rival, has become the all-time leading men’s international scorer last week with a brace against Ireland, taking him to 111 goals for his country, compared to Messi’s 76.

Both have won their continent’s main competition, with Ronaldo winning Euro 2016 and Argentina winning the Copa America earlier this summer, assisting Messi in breaking his duck.

The 34-year-six old’s Ballon d’Or victories are more than his rival’s five, and he is the bookies’ favourite to add another trophy to his collection this year.

Both men have a long list of personal accomplishments and records, and I suppose it’s up to each individual to decide which are the most impressive.

There must have been a few Z-factor seasons for each player as well, as both have made a significant contribution to their teams’ success, which is why they have won the Ballon d’Or.

In any case, it’s safe to say that, while this new algorithm is intriguing, it won’t help determine who is the best…
