Dean Holland, a rider who won the Group 1 event, died after falling during a race in western Victoria.
In the opening race at Donald, Holland was riding Tony McEvoy’s horse Headingley when the three-year-old gelding unexpectedly turned to the inside fence, resulting in a painful fall. At the top of the straight, when the field turned for home, Holland was flung from the horse.
Sadly, Holland was also knocked down, along with Alana Kelly and her pony, Time to Rumble, with Holland appearing to take the whole weight of both horses as they lay prone on the ground.
Despite receiving on-site medical care, Holland was unable to survive the fall. Kelly may go back to the jockeys’ room, on the other hand. The stewards opted to call off the meeting in light of the situation, and the racing community was horrified by Holland’s passing.
