Hopkins has a close bond with Sabrina Greenlee, the single mother who raised him. He attributes his achievement to her. Throughout his childhood, she worked at an auto factory and kept two jobs. Hopkins was a member of the track and field, basketball, and football teams for the Lions at D. W. Daniel High School in Central, South Carolina.
Hopkins had 57 receptions for 1,266 yards and 18 touchdowns during his high school football tenure, as well as 28 interceptions and five touchdowns on defence.
He played as a shooting guard and point guard for the basketball squad while accumulating 1,453 career points. The Lions earned their third South Carolina State Championship during Hopkins’ senior year, 2009–10, and he was named the Independent Mail’s player of the year. In both the State of South Carolina and the entire country, he was ranked as the 12th greatest wide receiver.
Several respected sports groups gave him rankings; ESPN placed him as the 29th best athlete. He was named to the state’s first squad of All-State athletes and The Charlotte Observer.
What happened to DeAndre Hopkins mom, Sabrina Greenlee?
Savannah Grant, then 24 years old, assaulted Sabrina Greenlee with acid in July 2002. Grant’s affair with Greenlee’s partner was discovered by Greenlee. Her neck, face, and back started to rapidly peel off as a result of the assault. She was picked up by her partner, put in his car, and driven to a gas station nearby.
The attendant at the gas station dialled 911, and Greenlee was taken to the hospital and then airlifted to Augusta, Georgia, where she underwent skin graft surgery on her face and was put into a medically induced coma for three weeks. More than 17% of Greenlee’s torso was burned.
Her assailant was given a 20-year sentence after being found guilty of assault and battery with the aim to kill. Since 2003, she has been detained in a prison. Hopkins’ mother suffered from this assault and is now totally blind.
