Following her collegiate career, Phoenix Mercury, a team that finished 8-26 in the 2003 season, selected Taurasi first overall in the 2004 WNBA draft. Because there were shorter players in the starting five on her team at some points in her career, she was forced to play forward.

She primarily plays guard, though. Additionally, the Mercury strengthened their squad by adding all-star Penny Taylor through a dispersal draft just before the 2004 season. Taurasi scored 22 points in her WNBA debut as the Mercury fell to the Sacramento Monarchs 72-66. The rookie had a season average of 17.0 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 3.9 assists.
