Dianne Feinstein bio

Dianne Emiel Goldman Feinstein, a native of San Francisco, was born to Leon Goldman, a surgeon, and his wife Betty, a former model. Her paternal grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Poland, while her maternal grandparents, the Rosenburgs, hailed from Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Although of German-Jewish descent, the Rosenburgs adhered to the Russian Orthodox (Christian) faith, as was required for Jews in Saint Petersburg. Feinstein’s mother, who received Christianity from her parents, insisted on transferring her from a Jewish day school to a prestigious local Catholic school.

However, Feinstein identifies herself as Jewish. Feinstein graduated from Stanford University in 1955 and went on to be elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1969. In 1978, she made history as the board’s first female president, a position she held during the highly publicized assassinations of Mayor George Moscone and City Supervisor Harvey Milk.

Following Moscone’s death, Feinstein succeeded him as mayor, becoming the first woman to hold the position. During her tenure, she spearheaded the renovation of San Francisco’s cable car system and oversaw the successful organization of the 1984 Democratic National Convention. Despite facing a recall attempt in 1983, Feinstein remained a popular mayor and was recognized as the most effective mayor in the country by City & State in 1987.

After an unsuccessful bid for governor in 1990, Feinstein won a special election in 1992 and became California’s first female U.S. senator. Shortly after, she assumed the role of the state’s senior senator following Alan Cranston’s retirement in January 1993.

Feinstein has since been reelected five times, with her 2012 campaign garnering a record-breaking 7.86 million votes, the highest number ever received by a U.S. Senate candidate.

Feinstein’s notable accomplishments include authoring the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban and being the first woman to chair both the Senate Rules Committee and the Senate Intelligence Committee. Additionally, she made history as the first woman to preside over a U.S. presidential inauguration.
