Dianne Emiel Goldman Feinstein, a native of San Francisco, was born to Leon Goldman, a surgeon, and his wife Betty, a former model. Her paternal grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Poland, while her maternal grandparents, the Rosenburgs, hailed from Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Although of German-Jewish descent, the Rosenburgs adhered to the Russian Orthodox (Christian) faith, as was required for Jews in Saint Petersburg. Feinstein’s mother, who received Christianity from her parents, insisted on transferring her from a Jewish day school to a prestigious local Catholic school.
However, Feinstein identifies herself as Jewish. Feinstein graduated from Stanford University in 1955 and went on to be elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1969.
