Dick Fosbury was a well-known high jumper from the United States. His birthplace is Oregon, and he was born on March 6, 1947. Dick is also well recognized for being a high jumper with an Olympic gold medal who invented the back-first technique that eventually became accepted procedure.

Dick Fosbury passed away peacefully in his sleep early on Sunday morning following a brief cancer relapse.

Fosbury was identified as having stage-one lymphoma in March 2008. A month later, he underwent surgery to remove a malignant tumor that was enveloping his lower spine. The tumor was not entirely removed because of worries about its proximity to the spine; instead, he underwent chemotherapy.

Fosbury declared he was in remission in March 2009.

He stated that he was “doing well” and “free of cancer” in an interview with the Corvallis Gazette-Times in March 2014.

Fosbury received the Excellence Guirlande d’Honneur and was inducted into the FICTS “Hall of Fame” during the 2008 edition of the “Sport Cinema & TV – Milano International FICTS Fest”.

Fosbury belonged to the “Champions for Peace” club, which was established by the worldwide organization Peace and Sport, based in Monaco, and comprised 54 well-known professional athletes dedicated to promoting peace through sport.

Fosbury founded World Fit, a nonprofit that supports young fitness initiatives and Olympic principles, along with fellow Olympians Gary Hall and Anne Cribbs.

Fosbury died on March 12, 2023, aged 76, after a short fight with a return of lymphoma. He was married to Robin Tomasi, with whom he had a son named Erich as well as Stephanie and Kristin, Robin’s daughters.
