During his time at Navarro College in 2009, Hayden made an impact as a freshman, playing in 10 games and recording 23 tackles, including one for a loss. The following year, he played a crucial role in leading Navarro College to their second NJCAA National Football Championship in the 2010 season.
Hayden played in all 11 games, accumulating 33 solo tackles, six pass breakups, and three interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. His impressive performance earned him a spot on Rivals.com’s Top 50 Junior College Players list, ranking at #41.
In 2011, Hayden committed to the University of Houston and joined their football team. He continued to showcase his skills and dedication on the field throughout the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Despite being invited to the NFL Combine, Hayden was unable to participate in physical drills due to his ongoing recovery from surgery.
However, he did take part in Houston’s Pro Day on March 18, 2013, where he completed most of the drills, excluding the bench, short shuttle, and three-cone drill due to a hamstring injury sustained during the 40-yard dash.
Notably, NFL analyst Mike Mayock ranked Hayden as the top cornerback prospect in the draft, while analyst John Norris ranked him seventh among cornerbacks. NFLDraftScout.com also regarded him as the fourth-best cornerback in the draft. Hayden’s impressive skills and rankings made him a highly sought-after player in the NFL draft.
