He has Celtic ancestry. Irwin spent three years as an associate director at business transfer experts Christie & Co before working for Colliers International. Additionally, the show is aired daily on More4, Discovery Real Time, Discovery Travel & Living, and on channels in Europe and other countries like New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. Irwin claimed in 2022 that the makers of A Place in the Sun fired him as a presenter after 18 years because a cancer diagnosis had made him feel “really low.”

In addition, Irwin hosts the BBC’s Escape to the Country and To Purchase or Not to Buy. Irwin also hosted the Escape to the Perfect Town spin-off of Escape to the Country.

Irwin helped people leave their lives in the UK and purchase a business in his own show, Dream Lives for Sale, which was broadcast on Sky 1 in January 2011. He started a new show in late 2011 called The Renovation Game, which broadcast on Channel 4 on weekday mornings.
