Dominic Barton is a Ugandan-born Canadian business executive, author, and diplomat. He is the current chairman of the private investment firm LeapFrog Investments as well as the chancellor of the University of Waterloo.

Dominic Barton was born in 1962 in the Ugandan city of Mukono. Barton’s mother was a nurse, while his father was an Anglican missionary who worked to establish a theological school in Uganda.
Idi Amin, a military and future dictator who was ascending to power in Uganda at the time lived in his family’s home when he was a little boy.
At the age of seven, his family immigrated to Canada from Uganda, finally settling in Sardis, British Columbia. Barton graduated with a Bachelor of Economics from the University of British Columbia.
He obtained a Rhodes Scholarship and attended Oxford University’s Brasenose College, where he earned an MPhil in Economics.

Following graduation, Barton spent a short time in London working as a currency analyst for N M Rothschild & Sons. He was employed by McKinsey & Company in 1986. and spent eleven years working as a management consultant out of the company’s Toronto office.
From 2009 to 2018, Barton held the position of Global Managing Director, which he was voted to. After leaving this post, Barton took on a wider range of advisory and philanthropic jobs and spent a year as Global Managing Director Emeritus.
He served as chairman of the natural resources behemoth Teck from 2018 to 2019, one of the biggest exporters of coal used in the production of steel.
Due to the increasing work, McKinsey undertook with Teck in that year, including projects like “Drill and Blast” and “Coal Processing Optimization,” one person left McKinsey. He was chosen to serve as Canada’s ambassador to the People’s Republic of China on September 5, 2019.
