American professional basketball player Donovan Mitchell Jr. plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association. He was given the moniker “Spida” after being picked with the 13th overall pick in the first round of the 2017 NBA Draft. In four NBA All-Star games, he has participated.

In the 2017 NBA Draft, the Denver Nuggets selected Mitchell with the 13th overall choice. Later, he was exchanged for Trey Lyles and the 24th overall pick (Tyler Lydon) by the Utah Jazz. Mitchell and the Jazz came to terms on a four-year rookie scale contract on July 5, 2017.
Mitchell and Adidas came to a multi-year footwear partnership on July 11, 2017. With 37 points against the Memphis Grizzlies later that day in Las Vegas, Mitchell set an NBA Summer League record for most points scored by a player.
On October 18, 2017, Mitchell made his NBA debut against the Denver Nuggets, scoring 10 points and dishing out 4 assists.
He had a career-high 41 points on December 1, 2017, as the Phoenix Suns defeated the New Orleans Pelicans 114-108.
On January 4, 2018, Mitchell was given the Western Conference Rookie of the Month title for December 2017 for his 34.3 minutes of play per game average of 23.1 points, 3.4 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.8 steals.
On January 15, 2018, Mitchell broke Karl Malone’s record for the most 20+ point games in a rookie season when he had his 19th game with that many points. Due to Aaron Gordon of the Orlando Magic’s strained left hip flexor, the NBA decided to use Donovan as a stand-in for the 2018 NBA Slam Dunk Contest on February 5, 2018.
The Oklahoma City Thunder were Mitchell’s opponent in his first postseason game on April 15, and he finished with 27 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 assists. He was questionable for Game 2 due to a foot ailment, but he was able to participate and scored 28 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter, to help the Jazz defeat the Suns 102-95.
Mitchell had a season-high 38 points on October 24, 2018, as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Houston Rockets 100-89. In a 106-102 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on January 25, 2019, Mitchell notched his first and only double-double of the year with 24 points and 11 assists.
Mitchell’s five 30-point games in January, three of which were back-to-back, earned him the Western Conference Player of the Week honors for the days of January 6–13.
On February 22 against the Oklahoma City Thunder in a 148-147 double overtime loss, Mitchell tied his season-high of 38 points. On March 2, Mitchell scored a career-high 46 points in a 115-111 win over the Milwaukee Bucks.
To start the 2019–20 season, the club defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 105–95 on October 23, 2019, with Mitchell contributing 32 points and 12 assists. On February 23, Mitchell was chosen as a Western Conference reserve for the NBA All-Star Game of 2021, marking his second consecutive All-Star outing.
On February 3, Mitchell was selected as a Western Conference backup for the NBA All-Star Game of 2022, marking his third consecutive All-Star selection.
On September 1, 2022, Mitchell was part of a trade that included Lauri Markkanen, Collin Sexton, Ochai Agbaji, three first-round picks, and two pick swaps for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
