American professional basketball player Donovan Mitchell Jr. (born September 7, 1996) plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was selected with the 13th overall pick in the first round of the 2017 NBA Draft, earning the nickname “Spida”. He has played in four NBA All-Star games.

Mitchell represented the Louisville Cardinals in collegiate basketball, where he was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference’s (ACC) first team that year. He won the Slam Dunk Contest in 2018 and was selected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team while a rookie with the Utah Jazz. He was traded from the Jazz to the Cavaliers in 2022.

His father was a former Minor League Baseball player, and his mother, who is of Panamanian origin, is a teacher. Mitchell was raised around Major League Baseball locker rooms because his father was the director of player relations for the New York Mets.
At the age of seven, he idolized Scott Kazmir, a standout pitcher in the Mets’ minor league system, and later David Wright, who was the subject of the very first poster he ever posted on his wall. With the 13th overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, Mitchell was selected by the Denver Nuggets. He was later traded to the Utah Jazz in exchange for the 24th pick (Tyler Lydon) and Trey Lyles. Mitchell and the Jazz agreed to a four-year rookie scale contract on July 5, 2017.
Mitchell and Adidas agreed to a multi-year shoe contract on July 11, 2017. Later on that day, Mitchell recorded the highest point total of any player during the 2017 NBA Summer League as he defeated the Memphis Grizzlies in Las Vegas with 37 points. On October 18, 2017, Mitchell made his NBA debut against the Denver Nuggets, scoring 10 points and dishing out four assists.
