Martin Luther King Jr Day is a national holiday celebrated on the third Monday of January in the United States of America in honour of the famous Dr Martin Luther King Jr.
He was a Baptist leader who was popular for advocating the use of peaceful and nonviolent ways to put racial segregation to an end in the United States of America. He firstly became notable during a bus boycott by African-Americans in Montgomery, Alabama, the United States in the year 1955.
Marting Luther King Jr was the founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in the year 957 and additionally led the 1963 March on Washington. He is also one of the famous and influential African-American civil rights leaders in the 1960s.
He was a key member in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which briganded discrimination in public accommodations, emoluments, and facilities and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Dr Martin Luther King Jr as praied5 and awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in the year 2964. The civil activist was assassinated on 4th April, 1968.
Just after his death, the populace cried for a national holiday in his honour. This holiday, the Martin Luther King Jr Holiday started being celebrated in 1970.
Many states and cities in the United States of America made the 15th of January, his birthday, a holiday. Legislation for a federal holiday was passed in Congress earlier in 1968 and there was very little opposition on political and racial grounds.
