Dr. Mod Helmy also known as Mohammed Helmy was an Egyptian physician who was born on July 25, 1901, in Khartoum, Sudan, which was then part of Egypt. Not much is known about his early life and upbringing, but he pursued a career in medicine and became a qualified doctor.
During World War II, Helmy’s life took a significant turn as he found himself in the midst of one of the darkest periods of human history. He was living in Berlin, Germany, at the time when the Nazi regime was in power and Adolf Hitler’s genocidal policies were being executed, leading to the Holocaust.
Despite the dangers and risks to his own life, Mohammed Helmy demonstrated immense bravery and compassion. He actively helped Jewish individuals who were facing persecution and possible extermination at the hands of the Nazis. Helmy provided medical assistance, shelter, and support to Jews, often putting his own life on the line to protect them from the authorities.
One notable example of his heroism was his assistance to a Jewish family named Anna Boros. When the Gestapo, the Nazi secret police, came looking for her, Helmy hid Anna in his own home and provided her with medical care when needed. Along with his close friend Frieda Szturmann, who was also involved in rescuing Jews, Helmy did everything in his power to safeguard those in danger.
After the war, Mohammed Helmy continued to live in Berlin until he died in 1982. For many years, his courageous acts went largely unnoticed and unrecognized by the wider world.
However, in 2013, Yad Vashem, Israel’s official memorial to the victims of the Holocaust, posthumously recognized Mohammed Helmy as one of the Righteous Among the Nations—an honor bestowed upon non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust.
