The word xenophobia means intense or irrational dislike or fear of people from other countries. The hard economic situations in most West African countries have forced people to flee and look for comfort elsewhere particularly in Europe and America.
However South Africa has become a major destination for asylum seekers and people and seeking greener pastures. As a result of intense competition for jobs, commodities and housing between the immigrants and the legitimate citizens, foreigners now face extreme discrimination and violence at the hands of South Africans.
Between 2000 and just last week over 100 foreigners of African descent have been killed in South Africa which has sparked outrage among politicians in Africa.
Actor Prince David did not mince words at all when he wrote on his Facebook wall condemning the attack and called for an abrupt end to the barbaric act. He wrote:
What is wrong South Africa? Why? This is why from the first time I touched down in South Africa never bothered to visit again, because right from the airport was obvious they don’t like foreigners yet you advertise for tourists to visit your country….say No to Xenophobia.
We only hope these attacks will stop because it simply doesn’t make sense.
