Felix Afena Gyan: From a random High School footballer to AS Roma and Black Stars in the space of two years

In the space of just two years, Ghanaian youngster, Felix Afena Gyan has moved from a random Senior High School student in Berekum to a world class footballer playing in one of Europe’s top five leagues under manager Jose Mourinho.

The 19-year-old is now the leading force in attack for the senior national team, the Black Stars of Ghana who will feature in the upcoming FIFA World Cup which will be hosted in Qatar.

In 2020, young Felix Afena Gyan was part of the Senior High School batch whose final exams got delayed because of the pandemic.

Eventually in July 2020 the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) came off and he graduated from high school.

While playing for Berekum Presby SHS in an Inter-School competition as a midfielder in 2020 before completing, he was spotted by FIFA Football Agent Oliver Arthur

The Agent was impressed by his performance and after graduating high school, he facilitated a travel to Italy for trails in the junior teams of some Italian clubs.

Felix Afena Gyan did impress the technical team of the AS Roma junior team and was signed as a midfielder in March 2021.

Felix who was a midfielder before joining AS Roma U-19 team was transformed from a midfielder into a striker.

He earned promotion from the U-19 team in just a space of a year as Jose Mourinho promoted him to the senior team of AS Roma.

He made his Serie A debut on October 27 2021, scored his first and second goal after coming on as a substitute in the game against Genoa on November 21, 2022 in the 82nd minute and the 90th minute to secure 2-0 win for his club.

Felix Afena Gyan received a call up for Ghana’s World Cup qualifier against South Africa but he asked for permission to decline the invite with reasons that he wasn’t ready.

Fast forward in March 2022, he honored an invitation for the FIFA World Cup playoff tie against Nigeria.

He started both the home and away game and helped Ghana to qualify to the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Felix Afena Gyan in a Twitter post has attributed his rise to Grace.
