Former One Direction Member Zayn Malik Confirms He No Longer Identifies As Muslim

Zayn Malik, former member of music group One Direction has revealed in an interview that, he no longer sees himself as a Muslim as he once did.

He said this in an interview with British Vogue, when he was about his religious beliefts, but he confessed that, he no longer believes in any religion.

He said: “I’m not professed to be a Muslim,” adding, “No, I wouldn’t” when asked if he considered himself to be a Muslim any longer.

The 25-year-old star said he has more belief in being a ‘good person’. He said: “I don’t believe you need to eat a certain meat that’s been prayed over a certain way, I don’t believe you need to read a prayer in a certain language five times a day. I don’t believe any of it. I just believe if you’re a good person everything is going to go right for you.”

He added he doesn’t abide to typical practices of the Islamic religion such as completing daily prayers or eating only halal meat.

Recently Zayn celebrated Eid al-Adha, also called the Festival of Sacrifice, with his family and girlfriend, the supermodel Gigi Hadid. It marks the end of the Hajj pilgrimage, one of the five pillars of Islam – and Muslims celebrate the day with food, gifts, prayers and a family gathering.

However, he said it was ‘easy’ to come away from the religion he was brought up in because his parents, although they raised their children Muslim always gave them a choiceto follow the religion in their own way.

When talking about his religious beliefs in the past he said: “I take a great sense of pride – and responsibility – in knowing that I am the first of my kind, from my background. I’m not currently practising but I was raised in the Islamic faith, so it will always be with me, and I identify a lot with the culture. But I’m just me. I don’t want to be defined by my religion or my cultural background.”

Many people have been upset with the star’s choice to leave the religion and taken to Twitter to express themselves.

One person said: “Zayn Malik left Islam? Feel like I’m going through a break up, my chest is hurting must be my heart.”

Another said: “Me finding out Zayn is no longer Muslim: my heart has physically left my chest, i am being crushed by grief and anguish, I can physically FEEL him become a kaffir.”

But others have supported the star in his change, as one person tweeted: “He’s entitled to leave a faith if he chooses too. There is no compulsion in this faith and there’s definitely isa door if you choose to leave.”
