The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has responded to a recent poll that named the Ghana Police Service as Ghana’s most corrupt governmental institution.

According to studies released last week by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) and other stakeholders, the Ghana Police Service is the nation’s most corrupt governmental agency.

The study, titled “Corruption in Ghana, Peoples Experiences and Views,” examined 24 public entities in total.

The poll sought to identify dishonest organizations and provide information that would inform the creation of policies to stop the problem.

The report found that bribes of more than GHC17.4 million were given in 2021. With 53.2 percent, police officers were the most corrupt public authorities.

The top three types of public officials who took the biggest cash bribes in 2021 included immigration agents, prosecutors, judges or magistrates, and officers of the Lands Commission.

However, George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector-General of Police, does not appear to be satisfied with the conclusions, not only in terms of the classification of his organization as being the most corrupt but also in terms of other aspects, such as methodology.
