Ghanaians hail Togbe Afede for returning GHS365,000 paid to his account as ex-gratia to the state

Togbe Afede XIV, the Asogli State’s Paramount Chief, has been hailed by Ghanaians after he refused to take the GHS365,000 that was deposited into his account as an ex-gratia for serving on the Council of State.

Togbe Afede who has now been seen as a patriotic citizen in a statement has returned the funds to the Ghanaian government via the Bank of Ghana.

According to a statement released by the Agbogbomefia, he received a monthly salary and allowances while serving on the Council of State, thus he does not feel the need to pay the ex-gratia.

“I did not think the payment was made to trap me, as is being speculated. I believe it was paid to everybody who served on the Council of State. However, I thought that extra payment was inappropriate for a short, effectively part-time work, for which I received a monthly salary and was entitled to other privileges. So, I was very uncomfortable with it,” Togbe Afede XIV said in a statement.

“After weeks of trying, I obtained advice on how to refund inappropriate payments to the State, and on March 4, 2022, I made the refund into the Controller & Accountant General’s Department Suspense Account at the Bank of Ghana.”

In reaction to his kind gesture, Ghanaians have taken to Twitter to praise him for thinking about the welfare of his people at the expense of making his pocket full.
