Last year June, the Nigerian government stopped Twitter after the company removed a tweet from President Muhammadu Buhari about punishing regional separatists.

Authorities charged the social media company of supporting secessionists. However, the government said that the ban would be lifted after Twitter agreed to certain requirements, including the establishment of a local office in Nigeria.

As a result of the move, millions of people in Africa’s most populous country will be able to access the site again. After the site was suspended, some people continued to use virtual private networks to access it (VPNs).

The government of Nigeria took a measure last year that generated international concern about the country’s lack of freedom of expression.

The social media company’s decision to register in Nigeria, according to Nigeria’s information technology development agency, shows its commitment to the country.

Twitter has not responded to Nigeria’s decision to lift the ban.
