He was raised in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights. In 1988, Jeffries received his high school diploma from Midwood. He continued his education in political science at Binghamton University, where he earned an honours Bachelor of Arts degree in 1992.
He joined the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity while attending Binghamton University. Jeffries pursued graduate work at Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy, where he graduated in 1994 with a Master of Public Policy. He then enrolled in the New York University School of Law, where he was a contributor to the school’s law review. He received his Juris Doctor degree in 1997.
In the Democratic primary in 2000, Jeffries ran against then-incumbent Assemblyman Roger Green. Jeffries criticized Green for being unresponsive to the interests of his residents and preoccupied with seeking higher office (Green had run for New York City Public Advocate in 1997 and had spoken of his plans to run for Congress upon the retirement of Edolphus Towns).
As a more moderate Democratic representative in the House, Jeffries stated that he is open to working with Republicans “wherever possible, but we will also fight back against extremism whenever required.” He also wants to get along well and cooperate with more liberal Democrats. “A rising star” has been used to describe Jeffries since he entered politics.
