How TikTok Killed Instagram Under 1 Year – The Full Story

I chanced on a video on Tiktok which kinda explains how the developers of TikTok took a wise step to develop an app that has rendered Instagram uninteresting and useless.

How did TikTok steal Instagram’s shine and overtake them in terms of innovation just within 1 year? What did the developers do differently?

An article written by Molly McElaney, a Content Creator and Marketing Freelancer on LinkedIn dated March 18, 201 with the caption, ” TikTok is killing Instagram” puts everything you need to know into proper perspective.

She wrote:

TikTok vs. IG? Are you ready to witness this faceoff between the two most used social media apps? But before we start, let’s get into where this whole situation started from.

Instagram was launched in 2010 and gained attention in 2012, while TikTok was released in 2016 and mostly became popular in 2017 and was previously known as musical.

However, after TikTok gained recognition during the pandemic, their downloads and views surged at a staggering rate, so much so that it surpassed the famous Facebook-owned app, Instagram, as the most downloaded social media app.

During this time, Instagram also introduced a new feature resembling TikTok called Reels. With the rising popularity of TikTok, Instagram is facing tough competition and is fighting to get back to the top.

But why has TikTok gained so much popularity? What does it have that Instagram doesn’t? Well, TikTok is no ordinary app programmed with an AI algorithm; it focuses on bringing innovation with creative content and ad campaigns.

The best part is that TikTok doesn’t have a target audience or, more like, doesn’t need one. Their content mostly includes short 15-second videos that are highly engaging due to their relatable content like humour, dance, singing videos, life hacks, makeup, and other genres that compel users to spend around an hour every day on average.

On the other hand, Instagram has added several features like IGTV, adding stories, an e-commerce platform to entertain their audience.

But everyone who uses an Instagram, filter and edit their lives, making it a highly competitive and selective social media app. People always feel like they lack something or the other by looking at Instagram models and often end up depressed trying to recreate ‘insta-worthy’ pictures like them.

The competition is reaching the sky as people now reach out to media agencies like Round Seven. The latter help them equip social media marketing strategies like run ad campaigns, create creative content to attract more followers from their target audience.

It’s clear from this point on. TikTok has and will beat Instagram, despite Mark Zuckerberg’s innovative efforts to add a unique touch to its features.

I also believe that TikTok has a greater chance of flourishing since the target audience is the youth and generations to come.

TikTok has given people a chance to be transparent, unique, and be whatever version of themselves they like. Unlike Instagram, likes, follow, and views are not a big deal for users. The competition is tough, but in the end, the decision lies in the hands of people.

Social media is the most trending platform for social engagements, and brands are using this medium for marketing and publicizing their products.

Media agencies such as Round Seven promote social media platforms such as Instagram and Tik Tok to build their consumer base through innovative marketing strategies.
