On Wednesday, May 26, 2021, the former Fulham Midefielpder was arrested together with other drivers for flouting the traffic regulations.

This was a routine exercise by the Accra Central Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) on the Olusegun Obasanjo Way and J A Kufour Avenue in Accra.

After he was caught, Derek Boateng exchanged some words with the officers and announced that he is a national asset and there is no way the police officers will not find him if they want.

He bemoaned the fact that despite his service to the nation as a footballer, he was been treated as a mere stranger.
