Mercy Boakye, a Ghanaian living in Iraq, has remarked that she enjoys her housekeeping work since she earns money she never had in Ghana.
Mercy claimed that she used to work as a weeder in her hometown of Berekum. Mercy revealed on SVTV Africa with DJ Nyaami that she learned of a “connection” to Iraq and followed through on it.
When asked about her employment and wages, Mercy said that it was difficult at first, but that “it is now normal for me.” They abuse you at first because they know it’s your first time. They promised me I’d be working from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., but it frequently went until 1 a.m.
I protested about the burden, and it was finally lowered. You can’t go out unless you’re with the family I work with, and I never purchase anything. So, I’m OK with that,” she said.
Mercy also said that her contract is for two years and may be renewed. She said that she would like to extend her contract since she is satisfied with her employment and her compensation would improve with the contract renewal.
“I’m okay with it. I earn $250. It used to be 1,370ghc, but now that the dollar has gone up, I get more. I didn’t have that amount saved up while in Ghana, so I will renew the contract and stay two more years,” she said on Daily Hustle Worldwide.
The Baghdad-based Ghanaian revealed that she spent almost 4000ghc on travel documents and medicals.
