‘I will review the 10% tax on betting’ – Mahama gives investors hope

If elected president in 2024, former president John Dramani Mahama has pledged to reform several levies, including the 10% tax on sports betting.

“I’ve heard so many of the youth talk about sports betting. It is not just about taxes on betting, when we come to government we will look at the number of taxes imposed by the current government,” Mahama stated.

On August 15, 2023, the Ghana Revenue Authority formally instituted a withholding tax of 10% on all winnings from betting and lottery games.

Nevertheless, there is a vocal minority in Ghana that is unhappy with the decision and has lambasted Akufo Addo’s administration on social media.

The betting sector in Ghana has grown rapidly over the past decade, attracting a number of international betting organizations.

Sports betting has been a contentious topic in Ghana in recent years, with some people pointing out the dangers it poses to young people, such as the possibility of addiction.

Still, some maintain that, so long as no laws are violated, betting cannot be deemed a harmful practice since it is a lawful and legitimate means of generating money.
