President Akufo-Addo has promised to fight the activities of illegal small scale mining usually called ‘Galamsey” in his second term.
According to him, he is very serious about the fight against galamsey and he is poised to seeing an end to the menace.
President Akufo-Addo in his speech to Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin and other leaders of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council after they visited him at the Jubilee House said he has seen the problem and will fix it.
“We’ve seen what has happened to River Birim, Ankobrah and other major water bodies. I’ll put in a lot of effort into the galamsey fight for Ghanaians to know that I’m serious about the fight so that we can bequeath to the next generation the gold, water and other resources we inherited from our forefathers. I intend to do everything within my power in this second term to bring this galamsey menace to a conclusion in Ghana,” he stated.
Meanwhile, major river bodies have started to change colour due to the activities of galamsey. These polluted water bodies which serve as the primary source of freshwater for the Ghana Water Company Limited have become unfit for human consumption.
Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo did promise in 2017 to fight galamsey and also added that he was ready to put his presidency on the line.
