The “one teacher one laptop” initiative has continued to generate debate in the media space. Per records, KA Technologies Ghana Limited, a Ghanaian-based ICT company was contracted to produce the laptops.
However, the scores of teachers are outraged by the specifications and price of the laptops.
Discussion the “one teacher one laptop” initiative on yesterday’s episode of the New Day Show on TV3 (December 13), Jonny Hughes, the host disclosed that a friend teacher of his said that, it is an insult to teachers if he compares the laptops they have been provided with and his iPad. Another viewer indicated that there is no space in the laptops for memory upgrades.
But reacting to these complaints from the teachers, Richard Nyamah, a Deputy Communication Officer of the governing New Patriotic Party said the teachers who want to buy an iMac should buy it themselves. He asserted that teachers are complaining about the cost of Ghs1,500 and how much more Ghs5,000 if the Government decided to give each teacher an iPad. Richard Nyamah, therefore, asked a teacher who wants to own an iMac or an iPad to buy it himself.
“Why doesn’t the teacher buy an iPad (by himself)”? Because an iPad you will procure for Ghs5,000. They provide you with this for Ghs1,500 and you are complaining… You have graduated, they gave this thing (laptops the Government gave to the teachers) and you want an iPad, go and buy it”, he said.
