Polygamy is a term in a marriage that describes the condition where a man has the opportunity to marry more than one wife, provided he has the wherewithal to do so.
Polygamy has been so prevalent in Africa with many wealthy African men preferring to marry as many wives as they possibly can.
Not many women would want to share the same husband with another woman, making it a big deal when a woman makes it expressly clear that she is not against polygamy.
The Ghanaian award-winning actress, Ama K. Abebrese has said that she is not against the act.
According to her, polygamy is not acceptable in Ghanaian civil law, but customarily, there is nothing wrong with it in the Ghanaian society as it is being widely practised, and accepted, especially among the Muslim community.
She is of the view that it is all about the consent, and so, when two adults agree to be in it, there shouldn’t be any problem at all.
The issue of marriage has been in focus the past few weeks as the issue of homosexuality has been given some airspace in the country.
A case is being made for the rights of people who desire same-sexed marriages to be respected, and allowed to do what they want.
A lot more people have been speaking against it though, with claims that God frowns on it.
Ama K. Abebrese then sought to added her voice to the conversations by choosing to tackle the issue of polygamy which is also somewhat a problem in the society as many women seemingly go through life threatening ordeals in polygamous marriages.
She wrote on Facebook;
“FYI:
Polygamy in Ghanaian civil law is illegal.
Although it is practiced and widely accepted.
Yes… in customary law… it’s accepted.
And no…. I am not against Polygamy.
If consenting adults want to partake in polygamy or polyandry. Then it’s up to them.”
