In 1957, Mantle was born in Barnet, Hertfordshire. He was John Hallam’s cousin and a devoted Chelsea Football Club supporter since a young age. Between 1970 to 1975, Mantle attended the boarding school Kimbolton School in Kimbolton, Huntingdonshire, and sang for four years in the choir at St. John’s College, Cambridge. While still in school, he began working on a farm near Cambridgeshire and soon developed a passion for theatre.
Between 1974 and 1978, during the course of five seasons, he made appearances in 11 National Youth Theatre plays. Mantle resided in an Islington basement apartment while he was a student. Between 1978 and 1980, he received his training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).
Mantle was cast as consultant Dr Mike Barratt on Casualty, becoming one of its most well-known characters, after playing a number of small roles in other Hollywood movies like White Hunter, Black Heart (1990) and Alien 3 (1992).
After making an appearance in 85 episodes of Casualty between October 1992 and November 1996, he departed the show in 1996. However, after having trouble with his acting career, he returned to the character in Holby City in 1999 and continued to appear in 32 episodes until 2001.
Since leaving Holby City, Mantle has continued his successful stage career, appearing in plays like Coming Clean, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Educating Rita. He had an appearance in Rattle of a Simple Man in 2003, played The Narrator in The Rocky Horror Show in 2006, and played the villain Abanazer in an Aladdin pantomime at the Theatre Royal in Bath over Christmas and New Year’s in 2007–2008. He played comedian Tommy Cooper in the stage production Jus’ Like That! A Night Out with Tommy Cooper. It was one of his most difficult roles because of the variety of skills required for the performance.
