Kidd was heavily recruited for AAU teams and tournaments as a youngster, winning numerous MVP and all-star awards.
He visited Oakland’s city courts, where he frequently encountered future NBA Hall of Famer Gary Payton. He attended the East Oakland Youth Development Center.
Under the direction of coach Frank LaPorte at St. Joseph Notre Dame High School in Alameda, Kidd led the Pilots to back-to-back state championships while averaging 25 points, 10 assists, 7 rebounds, and 7 steals per game his senior year.
He also won a number of individual awards that year, including the Naismith Award for the best high school player in the country and Player of the Year accolades from PARADE and USA Today.
Kidd was selected as the California Player of the Year for the second time and was also a McDonald’s All-American. Kidd is the seventh-highest career scorer in the state (2,661 points) and the all-time leader in assists (1,155) in prep basketball. Kidd was recognized as one of the 35 Greatest McDonald’s All Americans on January 31, 2012.
