Jason Jonathan Roy was born on July 21st, 1990 in Durban, South Africa. Roy was born to Chonell Roy and Craig Roy. He shares the same parents with his sister who goes by the name of Kristan Roy.

After migrating to England with his family from South Africa aged 10, he attended The Hawthorns School before joining Whitgift School. At Whitgift School, he played alongside England opener Rory Burns, his age.

Reigate Priory Cricket Club was his local Surrey team. He played Surrey Under-11, Under-19, and Academy cricket.

Roy represented the South in the Under-17 ECB Regional Festival in Loughborough in July 2007. He played three matches against the West, Midlands, and North. Roy played no more for Surrey’s second team in 2007.

Roy became a Surrey second-team star in 2008. Roy scored 88 off 89 balls in his Hampshire Second XI Championship debut against South African Test match bowler Nantie Hayward. Roy joined Surrey at 89-4.
