He was a maternal Mohawk and a paternal Seneca, one of the 11 offspring of Captain Alexander George Edwin Smith, MC, Cayuga, and his wife Mabel Phoebe Dockstater, and the grandson of Mohawk Chief A. G. Smith and Mary Wedge.

His father fought in the Somme and Ypres campaigns during World War I, earning him a wound and a decoration.

He later worked as an adjutant in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, where he instructed Polish-American recruits for the Blue Army in preparation for duty in France.

In Calabasas, California, on March 5, 1980, Silverheels passed away from the stroke he suffered four years prior. He was 67.

His remains were returned to the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario after being cremated at Chapel of the Pines Crematory.
