Grey studied acting and dancing at the Dalton School in Manhattan, where she also made the acquaintance who would become her best friend, the actress Tracy Pollan.

Grey attended the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in Manhattan for two years to train as an actress after graduating in 1978. She supported herself while waiting for roles by working as a waitress.
