However, he gained his fame by hosting the sensational tabloid talk show, Jerry Springer, which aired from 1991 to 2018 and was notorious for its provocative topics and raucous audience.

Springer was born in the London Underground station of Highgate during World War II. His parents, German-Jewish refugees, fled from Landsberg a der Warthe, Prussia, and settled in Queens, New York when Springer was four. He attended Forest Hills High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts from Tulane University and a Juris Doctor from Northwestern University.

Throughout his life, Springer remained conscious of the brutal acts his family members faced during the Holocaust. His maternal grandmother was killed at the Chełmno extermination camp, and his paternal grandmother died in the Theresienstadt concentration camp. Her brother, Hermann Elkeles, a well-known Berlin doctor, also died in the same camp. Despite these tragedies, Springer became an outspoken advocate for Jewish causes.
