John Joseph Lydon was born on January 31st, 1956 in Holloway, London in the United Kingdom.
Lydon was born to Eileen Mary Barry and John Christopher Lydon. He shares the same parents with his three brothers; Jimmy Lydon, Martin Lydon and Bobby Lydon.
He grew up on the outskirts of an industrial area and frequently played with pals in the factories after hours.
After developing spinal meningitis aged seven, Lydon spent a year at Haringey’s St. Ann’s Hospital. He suffered four years of hallucinations, nausea, headaches, coma, and severe memory loss.

At fourteen or fifteen, he “broke out of the mould” and began to fight back against the oppressive school instructors, who he said prompted and pushed the youngsters to be “anti-anyone-who-doesn’t-quite-fit-the-mold.” He hated his secondary school, St. William of York Roman Catholic School in Islington, where he was tormented.
Lydon fought with his father about hair length after completing his O-levels. The teen clipped it and dyed hair bright green in defiance.
He was ashamed that his mother liked Hawkwind, Captain Beefheart, Alice Cooper, the Stooges, and more commercial musicians like David Bowie, T. Rex, and Gary Glitter when he was a kid.
Lydon was expelled after a fight with a teacher aged 15. After Hackney College, he attended Kingsway College with John Simon Ritchie.
