Karen Carpenter’s Biography

She was born on 2 March 1950 in New Haven, Connecticut to Agnes Reuwer and Harold Bertram Carpenter. Karen was not born alone. She had an elder brother by the name of Richard who developed an interest in music at an early age. He usually plays piano whiles his little sister dance to the tune. When Karen reached the age of 4, she was enrolled in tap dancing and ballet classes.

Karen entered Downey High School at the age of 14 in 1964. It was in high school she learned to drum so she started teaching herself how to play complicated lines and studying the difference between traditional and matched grips. And after a year, she could play complex time signatures. Finally, in 1967, she graduated from high school and was later enrolled as a music major at Long Beach State where she performed in the college choir with Richard.

The Carpenter’s first band was Two Plus Two, an all-girl trio formed with friends from Downey High. They later split and her brother, Richard joined the new group. This new band rehearsed daily and played jazz in nightclubs and also on the TV talent show Your All-American College Show.
