Heather Unbehaun, Kayla Unbehaun mother has been in the news the past few days. It is not as if she is being celebrated for any sort of achievements, but her alleged involvement in the disappearance of her daughter, who is now found, has been the reason she is in the news.

Six years after her kidnapping, Kayla Unbehaun, now 15 years old, was discovered safe on Saturday, May 13, 2023, in Asheville, North Carolina.

A woman from Plato’s Closet who prefers to stay anonymous recognized her mother, Heather, from news stories and notified the police, which led to the discovery of the missing person.

“I’m overjoyed that Kayla is home safe. I want to thank [the City of Elgin, Illinois Police and Fire Departments], the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and all of the law enforcement agencies who assisted with her case,” her father, Ryan, said in a statement. “We ask for privacy as we get to know each other again and navigate this new beginning.”

Just before 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Kayla was seen in the vicinity of Plato’s Closet. The missing toddler was recognized by a store clerk from “well-publicized media” and the authorities were contacted.

Officers determined that this was the missing youngster after conducting additional inquiries.

In November 2022, an episode of Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries included a segment on Kayla’s disappearance, which garnered widespread media interest.

Until this moment, she was not your regular outgoing person whom everyone knew.

Not much information is available about her background as she only became popular as a result of this case.

Many may say the thought of her daughter being away from her was what she didn’t want to have hence her alleged kidnap case.

Numerous versions claim that on July 5, 2017, Ryan Iskerka, Kayla Unbehaun’s father, went to pick up his daughter from her mother’s house.

According to the custody agreement, Kayla Unbehaun mother would see her every other weekend.

When Iskerka arrived, she found that Heather had left the previous day with their kid.

When his daughter was abducted, Iskerka allegedly claimed that Heather had her over for the Fourth of July weekend, which fell on a Tuesday, according to CBS.

It was said that Iskerka begged Heather to keep Kayla for an extra two days (Monday and Tuesday) because she had a holiday.

When Iskerka showed up to pick up his daughter on July 5, Unbehaun’s relatives informed him that none of them had returned from a camping trip.

Her mother was arrested last weekend and is being held on a $250,000 bond,” reads, a tweet from @NewsNew97351204, adding in a separate tweet; “Heather Unbehaun, 40, was arrested last weekend in Asheville, North Carolina after a store owner recognised Kayla at a shopping center in Asheville after watching an episode on her disappearance on a Netflix show and called the police.”

So Kayla Unbehaun mother is now in the grips of the law enforcement agencies.

Kayla Unbehaun was taken into the custody of the North Carolina Division of Social Services shortly after being found, according to NBC Chicago.

Her reunion with her family in Illinois is anticipated.
